According to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 35% of Americans work on the weekend. In addition, 35% of those who do work on weekends are normally scheduled to work only on weekdays. Many experts believe that the ability to do business from computers via email and over the Internet has contributed to the increase in the percentage of people who work on Saturdays and Sundays.

More about working weekends:

  • Walmart founder Sam Walton was notorious for holding meetings first thing on Saturday mornings. He argued that those who worked in retail should expect to have to work on the weekend.

  • The majority of people who work on weekends hold more than one job.

  • Research on emails containing malware has shown that hackers send fewer such emails on weekends, suggesting that even cyber criminals are inclined to not work on the weekend.
